Amazon is discontinuing its Just Walk Out technology.

Amazon has decided to revamp its Amazon Fresh stores by removing the “Just Walk Out” technology that allowed shoppers to skip the check-out line. The grocery chain is being led by Tony Hoggell, the senior vice president of grocery stores who joined Amazon in 2022. Reports from Bloomberg and Associate Press confirm the redesign of the stores, with customer feedback playing a crucial role in the decision-making process.

With dozens of Fresh grocery stores located across the United States, including states like California, Illinois, Virginia, and Washington, Amazon is also known for its cashier-free convenience stores under the Amazon brand. The company’s acquisition of Whole Foods in 2017 for $135 billion expanded its reach in the grocery industry, with now over 516 stores in operation in the US and Canada, particularly popular in states like California, Texas, and Florida.

The new shopping “smart” carts introduced in Amazon Fresh stores will offer customers the convenience of skipping the check-out line while still being able to monitor their spending in real-time. Customers will receive their itemized bill via email, providing them with a transparent view of their purchases. Although some projects may be abandoned due to customer feedback and preferences play a crucial role in shaping Amazon’s approach to retail innovation. Ultimately, customer satisfaction remains at the forefront of Amazon’s operations.
