Pan Zhanle Sets New World Record by Leading Off China’s 4×100 Freestyle Relay in 46.80

At the 2024 World Championships in Doha, China set a new world record in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay with a time of 3:11.08. The team consisting of Pan, Ji, Zhang, and Wang achieved this feat, with Pan setting a new world record in the long course meters men’s 100 freestyle. His time of 46.80 also earned him a $30,000 USD bonus and helped China win gold in the relay. This marked China’s first medal in the relay.

Zhanle broke David Popovici’s record by swimming a 46.80 and was notably faster in the final race than in the morning where he split a 48.26 flying start on the anchor leg. The competition showcased impressive performances from swimmers from various countries and set the stage for an exciting championship. Italy finished second while USA finished third in the relay final which saw many talented swimmers competing including Hungary, Greece, Serbia and Spain.
