Li Bingjie Sets the Pace in 200 Freestyle

In the third morning of the World Championships in Doha, Li Bingjie led the 200 free in the sole women’s prelim. Despite not being among the medallists from the 2023 worlds competing at the Aspire Dome, Li was determined to make a name for himself in this event.

Li was joined by Erika Fairweather in the third prelim, who had won the 400 free ahead of Li on the opening evening. Fairweather was leading by a second at the final turn, but Li came past her with a strong finish to take the win in 1:57.16 to 1:57.40.

Despite missing out on a world record pace by just 0.13secs, Olympic silver medallist Siobhan Haughey showed impressive form in finishing fifth and final heat in 1:57.42 to 1:57.62. Janna van Kooten, a member of the Netherlands’ winning team at last year’s Asian Games, claimed the final spot into the semis with a time of 1:59.41, while Britain’s Lucy Hope missed out on qualification for tonight’s race.

Despite never winning a medal on this global stage before, Li remains determined to prove his worth and showcase his talent as he moves onto other events during these championships.
