Xi Jinping’s retreat on the global stage due to China’s slowing economy

Despite the challenges faced during the zero Covid years, China’s renewable energy sector continues to thrive. Chinese electric vehicles are projected to capture a quarter of European sales this year. Additionally, factory activity is rebounding, with analysts at Citi predicting 5% growth for the Chinese economy this year. While these developments bring hope for China’s future, concerns about the country’s slow growth persist.

Chinese young people have been hit particularly hard by the economic downturn, with over a fifth of them unemployed last summer before figures were stopped by the Communist Party. Despite this, consumer and business confidence in China remain at an all-time low.

However, despite these challenges, there are still bright spots for China’s present and future. Renewable energy is one such area that holds promise for the country’s growth. In addition, Chinese electric vehicles are expected to capture a significant share of European sales in 2021.

Despite these positive developments, there is concern that China may never be able to escape the middle income trap. This raises questions about the Communist Party’s mandate to rule and has prompted China to return to negotiations with other countries to address external pressures. Recent developments have shown a shift in China’s approach towards cautiousness as they seek to ease external pressures on their economy. For example, Xi Jinping met President Biden in San Francisco and had a two-hour phone call with him where he expressed concerns about America’s sanctions that could hinder progress in key sectors like semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Additionally, there has been renewed dialogue between the Chinese and American militaries following Xi Jinping’s visit with President Biden in San Francisco.

Overall, while China faces significant challenges in its present and future, there are still opportunities for growth and development if they can navigate external pressures effectively.
