Farewell to the Life Science Building: The Insider’s Perspective

A group of Pitt alumni has donated funds for the demolition of the Life Sciences Building and its replacement with a humanities building. Despite initial challenges, including funding issues that delayed the project and ultimately halted its completion, the new Life Sciences Building is now set to be constructed.

While most donors have chosen to remain anonymous, one member, Hugh Mungus, has spoken out about his views on the matter. Mungus believes that a building focused on science is unnecessary and finds the design of the current building to be unattractive. However, it’s worth noting that Mungus currently has multiple parking violations and is being searched for by Pitt-Greensburg police.

The estimated cost of dismantling the Life Sciences Building and constructing a new one has not yet been determined, but experts predict it could range from $10 to $15 million. The primary donor of the project, who prefers to remain anonymous, has expressed a desire to support further renovations on campus in the future. They believe that traditional architecture is more appealing than modern styles and are committed to rejecting it in favor of their preferred aesthetic.

Despite these challenges, a start date for the project has not yet been set, but the commitment to revitalizing campus remains strong among donors involved in this initiative.
