FDA cautions that widely-used pain-relief creams could present serious health hazards

If you receive microdermabrasion treatments, laser hair removal, tattoos, or piercings, you may want to take note of a recent warning issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about popular over-the-counter topical pain-relief products.

Six companies have received warning letters from the FDA for marketing unapproved and misbranded products with higher-than-allowed concentrations of lidocaine. These products are used to alleviate pain associated with cosmetic procedures. However, the FDA has found that they contain excessive lidocaine levels, which can lead to serious side effects like irregular heartbeat, seizures, and breathing issues.

It is important to be cautious when using products containing high levels of lidocaine on large areas of skin or irritated skin as it can result in severe injury. The FDA recommends using products with no more than 4% lidocaine and avoiding wrapping them on the skin with dressings or plastic wraps.

The affected products include TKTX Numb Maximum Strength Pain Reliever, NumbSkin Lidocaine Numbing Creams, Signature Tattoo Numbing Cream, Miracle Numb Spray, INK-EEZE Original B Numb Numbing Gel and more. For more information on these products and how to stay safe while using them, visit the FDA’s warning website.
