Health Center in Boston Providing Direct Delivery of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables to Patients in Need

New Health, an affiliated program of Mass General Hospital and Boston Medical Center in Boston, is taking a holistic approach to food insecurity by bringing fruits and vegetables directly to patients in need. Dan Coakley, public affairs coordinator for New Health, explained that the initiative started as a response to the growing need for food security among members of the community.

On a recent day, WBZ-TV cameras visited New Health’s location in Charlestown during their monthly food distribution event. Coakley explained that they purchase bags of fresh produce each month and distribute them to patients who have been notified in advance. The produce includes items such as bananas, apples, oranges, avocados, asparagus, onions, and potatoes. Each bag goes a long way and helps several people within the community.

Once the patients on the list have received their food, any leftover produce is placed into a community refrigerator so that anyone in need can access it. Patient Carmen Tirado expressed her gratitude for the program and said that it has made a huge difference in her life. Coakley emphasized the importance of providing this resource to those who need it most and ensuring that they continue to do so in the future.
