The increasing relationship between professional sports and the sports betting industry

Andrew Brandt discussed the long battle that the state of New Jersey went through in order to implement sports betting. The legal battle lasted seven years, with the leagues, including the NFL, fighting it in court and spending tens of millions of dollars in legal fees. Finally, on May 14, 2018, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of New Jersey, allowing states to implement sports betting.

This decision didn’t directly legalize sports betting, but it opened the door for states to do so. As of today, 38 states and the District of Columbia have legalized sports betting. This has changed the landscape of sports betting, making it more accessible to people in a majority of states.

Another aspect of the discussion was the allure of Las Vegas. Traditionally known as a city with everything but sports, Vegas has seen a shift with the arrival of sports teams. The NHL, WNBA, and NFL franchises have all made their way to Las Vegas, changing the dynamics of the city. The moral high ground of the NFL was called into question when they decided to place a franchise in Las Vegas, despite its previous stance on sports betting.
