Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate in the upcoming G20 summit, which is being hosted by India. This will be the first time that Putin has engaged in direct talks with Western leaders since the invasion of Ukraine last February. The summit, which is being convened by Indian President Narendra Modi, will take place online on Wednesday.
At the previous G20 summit in New Delhi in early September, Russia was represented by Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov. Despite attempts by Western members of the group to isolate Russia following its invasion of Ukraine and impose sanctions on the export of Russian raw materials, these measures had little impact on Russian policy.
After India’s presidency comes to an end at the end of this month, Brazil will take over as the host country for the G20 summit.
