Salvini remains in power after surviving no-confidence motion in Italy

In Rome, Italy’s Chamber of Deputies voted against a no-confidence motion against Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who is also the leader of the Lega party. Despite facing criticism at home and abroad for his strict measures against boat refugees and his recent statements regarding Russia, Salvini received overwhelming support from the coalition of three center-right parties.

During his previous role as interior minister, Salvini gained notoriety in Germany for his controversial policies on refugee immigration. His recent statements regarding Russia have also sparked controversy, with some interpreting them as closely aligning with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin. The Lega has been under scrutiny for its past connections with Putin and has faced criticism within the party itself.

Despite these challenges, Salvini remains a powerful figure in Italian politics. The upcoming European elections in June will be a significant test for both Salvini and the Lega party. If the party underperforms, it could potentially lead to leadership changes within the government and put Salvini’s position at risk. However, given the Lega’s strong performance in previous elections, it remains to be seen how they will fare in this upcoming contest.
