Innovation Award: Release System Recognized for Technological Advancements

Koppert’s release system for ‘Mirica’, its biological solution, has been recognized as the first prize winner in the international Fruit Logistica Innovation Award Technology. The award was presented in Berlin on February 9th. The Fruit Logistica Innovation Award is concerned with innovations throughout the fruit and vegetable supply chain. Tim Bossinga, product manager at Koppert, stated, “Innovation lies at the heart of Koppert’s DNA and is a result of our continuous product development.”

Koppert has introduced a new packaging solution that replaces plastic product packaging with corrugated cardboard. According to Koppert, the cardboard strips create a “natural habitat” for Mirical beneficial bugs, allowing them to hide and better distribute themselves during transportation. This helps protect predatory bugs from damage and ensures they arrive at their destination in optimal condition. Additionally, the corrugated cardboard reduces clumping while improving bug distribution in crops, which aims to improve performance and whitefly control. The packaging is also fully compostable, labor-saving, easy to locate, and accurately dosed.

Mirical is a generalist pest predator that feeds on greenhouse whiteflies, tobacco whiteflies, eggs, caterpillars of the tomato leaf miner moth, and other moths. They also feed on two-spotted spider mites and aphids. The product was launched in France last year.
