LSSU initiative seeks to enhance student accessibility to mental health services

In a bid to address the mental health challenges faced by young adults and college students, Lake Superior State University (LSSU) has introduced a new initiative called Uwill. This program aims to provide students with enhanced access to mental health resources, including teletherapy and crisis support, connecting them with licensed therapists tailored to their individual needs. The initiative supplements existing counseling services designed to identify and assist students experiencing mental health crises.

Recent survey data has indicated that approximately 90 percent of adults believe the nation is confronting a mental health crisis that needs attention. Nearly half of college students surveyed felt they required help with mental health issues in the past year, yet a majority did not receive any counseling or therapy. LSSU officials are backing this initiative in response to these challenges, recognizing the need for more comprehensive mental health support for their students.

Expanding access to mental health support is also a key component of LSSU’s five-year strategic plan, which aims to enhance first-year student retention by bolstering support for first-generation, Pell Grant-eligible, and other underrepresented student populations. Anya Alexander, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, emphasizes that offering free clinical mental health counseling and support is an integral part of the university’s dedication to student success. By investing in teletherapy, LSSU aims to provide students with high-quality care and support tailored to their specific needs, thus enabling them to reach their full personal and academic potential.

The Uwill student and therapist matching platform has already been implemented at several other educational institutions nationwide, demonstrating its effectiveness in providing students with the necessary support to overcome mental health challenges and achieve success in their academic pursuits. With this new initiative in place at LSSU, students can now easily access the resources they need to prioritize their mental health and wellbeing while pursuing their dreams.
