Kansas City Chiefs and Royals Stadiums: A Look at the Rejected Sales Tax Proposal

The Missouri general municipal election saw a significant ballot item in Jackson County Question 1. Unfortunately, voters rejected this measure, which would have imposed a 3/8th-cent sales tax for stadium projects related to both the Chiefs and Royals. The polls closed on Tuesday at 7 p.m. local time, leaving the increased sales tax as a missed opportunity to fund new and renovated sports facilities in Kansas City.

GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, home to the Chiefs, is the third oldest active NFL stadium, having opened on Aug. 12, 1972. Over the years, it has undergone several renovations to keep up with changing technology and fan demands. Kauffman Stadium, where the Royals play, is the sixth oldest active MLB stadium and hosted its first game on April 10, 1973. Both stadiums are important to their respective teams and communities in Kansas City.

Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were part of an ad urging Jackson County voters to approve the sales tax measure, highlighting the importance of these stadiums to the community. Despite their support, the measure did not pass by a narrow margin.

Clarks Hunt, owner of the Chiefs, had previously expressed confidence that the measure would pass but was ultimately disappointed by the outcome. Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas acknowledged the strong fan base for both teams and vowed to work with them to develop a more inclusive and effective process for funding future stadium projects in Kansas City. While there may be setbacks along the way, there is optimism for a collaborative approach moving forward to address this issue.

In conclusion, while Jackson County Question 1 was not approved by voters in Missouri’s general municipal election last week
