Benji Solms, a guide at Serondella Game Lodge in Kruger National Park in South Africa, recounted the terrifying incident that occurred when a lioness and her cubs were enjoying a meal in a tree. Suddenly, a clan of hungry hyenas arrived and surrounded the tree, hoping to snatch some leftovers.
One of the cubs, inexplicably jumped down from the tree—an apparent attempt to flee the scene. However, it was quickly surrounded by the hyenas and their snapping jaws. The cub was fear-stricken; it froze as the whooping sounds of the hyenas and their scary sight made him shiver in his skin. He realized that he had made a life-threatening mistake.
The mother lion recognized the threat of losing her cub to the hyenas and took immediate action. She dropped the impala carcass from the tree and jumped to the ground to confront them head-on. The hyenas turned their attention from the helpless cub to the meat in front of them as they scurried off to feed on it. Thankfully, thanks to its mother’s sacrifice, dinner was saved for another day as she put herself on line for her cub’s safety
