Opposition poised to win city parliaments in Istanbul and Ankara

After two days of the surprising victory by the opposition in Turkey’s mayoral elections, there is expected to be another triumph for them in the city parliaments of Istanbul and Ankara. Preliminary results indicate that the center-left CHP party has replaced the AKP as the strongest force in both representations, as confirmed by a member of the electoral authority.

In 2019, the CHP had won the mayoral positions in both cities but did not secure a majority in the city parliaments. The mayors, Ekrem Imamoğlu in Istanbul and Mansur Yavas in Ankara, faced hindrances due to their opposition to Islamic conservatism and were labeled “lame ducks” by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Imamoğlu struggled to obtain loans for his projects due to resistance from the city parliament, while Yavas accused it of blocking his plans for expanding a sewage treatment plant. Both politicians complained about political blockades imposed by the central government on their metro projects and funding for municipalities.

The AKP’s loss in the city parliaments marks a significant shift in power dynamics, with more autonomy likely for CHP politicians to implement their agendas without hindrance from an opposition-majority parliament. The changing landscape could have implications for governance and development of these cities moving forward.
