The Delaware Tourism Office is launching the Delaware Sports Tourism Capital Investment Fund to provide financial support to First State sports facilities. The fund was established through the FY24 Bond Bill and will be open for applications from March 1st to April 12th.
Delaware Tourism Office Director Jessica Welch explained that the purpose of the fund is to help new or existing sports facilities that hold events and tournaments throughout the year, bringing in out-of-state visitors and creating an economic impact at the state and local level. “This fund will help us remain competitive when it comes to sports tourism,” Welch said.
Recently, Delaware has hosted several notable sporting events, including the Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball Tournament, the PGA’s 2022 BMW Championship, the MEAC Volleyball Championship, and many regional high school and youth sports events. The plan is to support a range of different facilities with the fund.
Welch noted that weekends in the summer bring a lot of money to the state because they are held consistently and create a reputation at the facility they are held. Officials expect that this fund will help attract more visitors and continue to highlight reasons to visit Delaware.
The Delaware Tourism Office will be hosting two informative webinars for potential applicants later this month to learn more about the fund.
