The NFL trade deadline has been extended until after Week 9.

The NFL trade deadline will be moved to the Tuesday after Week 9 starting in the 2024 season, following approval during the NFL’s annual meetings. The initial proposal to move the deadline back two weeks after Week 10 was submitted by Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry and supported by the Detroit Lions, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Commanders. However, it was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ proposal to push it back only one week that received the necessary three-fourths approval to pass.

One of the reasons behind Berry’s proposal was to give teams more flexibility as they head into the second half of the regular season. It was also aimed at maintaining the competitive integrity of the season and providing teams with more time before deciding to sell off their roster. Berry highlighted the fact that the trade deadline had not been adjusted when the NFL transitioned to an 18-week regular season.

Over the past decade, teams have been eliminated from postseason contention earlier than Week 11. Berry argued that moving the trade deadline to after Week 9 would allow teams to remain competitive and have additional flexibility in decision-making processes. Since 2012, when teams have until November 5 at 4 p.m. ET to finalize any trades before starting their second half of regular season.

The latest change marks a departure from previous years when trades were made on or after November 3rd. This shift provides teams with a greater opportunity to assess their performance through nine games and make informed decisions about their roster moves ahead of crucial matchups in December and January.

The NFL has stated that this change is meant to provide players with more stability as they enter a new phase of their careers while also allowing for more exciting finishes down stretch.

This change will impact players who are looking for new opportunities as well as those looking for long term stability in their current team. With this change, we can expect more activity on trading block as teams look forward towards playoffs.
