Ecuador’s justice system releases dangerous criminals with help from judges, police officers, and lawyers

On Wednesday, the Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office conducted raids and arrests of judges, former judges, judicial officials, practicing lawyers, and police officers in eight provinces of the country. These individuals are being investigated for facilitating the release of dangerous criminals through legal maneuvers and abuse of the law. The operations took place in the provinces of El Oro, Azuay, Manabí, Pichincha, Chimborazo, Tungurahua, Guayas, and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas.

The prosecution specified that the raids were related to organized crime, illicit enrichment, and influence peddling across various sectors. They emphasized their commitment to combating corruption within the justice system that has become a vicious circle of illegal activities. Images released by the institution showed police and ministry agents carrying out raids and arrests of individuals connected to the irregular practices of granting freedom in exchange for favors or money.

The exact number of people arrested nationwide and the specific cases that led to this operation have not been disclosed. However, last year a case was revealed involving significant involvement of drug trafficking in various sectors of Ecuadorian society including justice police politics and prosecutor’s office triggered by examination messages sent by a drug trafficker prior to his death in prison which revealed extensive networks corruption.
