NFL approves new rules for penalty enforcement on turnovers

This year’s league meeting will feature a ban on hip-drop tackles as the headline in rules changes. Additionally, the league has approved a change in how fouls are enforced during plays that result in a change of possession.

The Competition Committee proposed a major change that would allow penalties for offensive fouls like unnecessary roughness to be enforced during games when there are fouls committed by both teams. This was done to ensure consistency in enforcing major fouls and not ignoring offenses in these situations.

On Monday, the NFL announced that the proposal had been approved by team owners through a vote. In order for a rule change to become part of the rulebook, it must receive two-thirds approval from the league’s teams.

Another change that was approved was allowing teams an additional challenge if either of their first two challenges were successful. This gives teams more opportunities to challenge incorrect calls on the field.
