RINA Grants Approval in Principle to Kindon New Energy Technology Co. for New Energy Technology

RINA, a global leader in inspection, certification, ship classification, and engineering consultancy, has granted Kindon New Energy Technology (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. the Approval in Principle (AiP) for its revolutionary green methanol offshore production platform solution. This cutting-edge platform harnesses renewable CO2 and green hydrogen generated from wind power electrolysis technology to produce methanol entirely offshore.

Kindon New Energy’s CEO, Wenbo Wang, explained that their groundbreaking process uses green hydrogen produced from renewable sources, captures CO2 through Direct Air Capture (DAC), and synthesizes it with sustainable electricity to create methanol. The resulting product offers an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fossil fuels and contributes to efforts to reduce carbon emissions globally.

The offshore production platform developed by Kindon New Energy is designed to produce 0.1 million metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green methanol. The synthesis processes take place entirely on the platform, with the electricity needs being met by green power generated from offshore wind farms. The platform is also engineered to accommodate future access to additional sources of green or biomass-derived CO2.

Luigi Mattera, Greater China Marine Operations Director at RINA, highlighted the importance of supporting decarbonization technologies and emphasized the significance of using DAC technology in producing green methanol offshore. The AiP confirms that the methanol produced adheres to the highest standards of sustainability and utilizes innovative processes that utilize renewable resources.

RINA expressed their satisfaction in awarding Kindon New Energy the AiP for their pioneering production platform, underscoring its role in promoting sustainable and environmentally friendly practices in the marine and offshore industries.

In conclusion, RINA’s approval of Kindon New Energy’s innovative green methanol offshore production platform marks a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions globally through sustainable practices in marine and offshore industries.
