Richard Childress Racing switches up crew chiefs

Richard Childress Racing is set to make changes to their competition personnel ahead of the trip to Martinsville Speedway. The changes include Austin Dillon getting a new crew chief for the remainder of the season, with Justin Alexander returning to the No. 3 pit box. Keith Rodden, who originally joined RCR and the No. 3 team at the start of the 2023 season, will take on a larger role across the organization to enhance the performance of the team’s cars.

The winningest Cup team and Martinsville Speedway have a special relationship, with Alexander previously leading Dillon’s crew in part during their first race together and helping secure a Coca-Cola 600 win in 2017. He also remained on the pit box in 2018 when Dillon won his Daytona 500 victory.

Danny Stockman Jr., who was Dillon’s crew chief in 2019, returned to work with him in 2020 before taking over as lead engineer for Dillon’s No. 3 team through most of the NASCAR Cup Series season in 2021. The changes made were intended to improve Richard Childress Racing’s overall NASCAR Cup Series program as they prepare for the rest of the season and to secure two teams in the NASCAR Playoffs, according to Andy Petree, executive vice president for RCR.

As they head into Martinsville, Dillon is currently ranked 28th in the Cup standings with one top-20 finish coming in 16th place at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
