Amazon to discontinue using ‘Just Walk Out’ technology at grocery stores

Amazon has decided to discontinue its “Just Walk Out” self-service technology at Amazon Fresh stores in the United States. The company will be replacing this technology with the “Amazon Dash Cart,” which provides a similar checkout-free experience for customers.

The new Amazon Dash Cart allows shoppers to scan items before placing them in the cart and pay automatically without having to wait in line. This feature offers more convenience for customers, who expressed a desire for features like finding nearby products, viewing their receipt, and knowing how much they saved while shopping.

According to Amazon spokesperson Jessica Martin, the company has been redesigning its Amazon Fresh stores to enhance the overall shopping experience and offer more convenience. The introduction of the Amazon Dash Cart is an example of this effort. While Amazon is removing the “Just Walk Out” technology from Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S., it will continue to be available at Amazon Go stores and smaller Amazon Fresh stores in the U.K. The first cashier-less Amazon grocery store outside the U.S. was opened in London in 2021.
