A lion at Greenville Zoo succumbs to health problems

After a discussion among zoo staff, the Greenville Zoo announced that they had to make the difficult decision to euthanize Saied, one of their African Lions at the age of 15. Saied had been receiving treatment for degenerative joint disease and a spinal neurological issue but recent testing revealed that his conditions had worsened significantly, affecting his quality of life. Despite his best efforts, he was no longer able to live a comfortable life.

Saied and his brother Chuma had joined the Greenville Zoo from the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia back in 2010. Saied was known as the dominant male of the pair and it is now up to the zoo staff to monitor Chuma as he adjusts to the loss of his brother. Plans are being made for a remembrance for Saied and visitors are encouraged to come by and pay their respects.

The Greenville Zoo expressed their sadness over losing such an important member of their community. They appreciate the support and understanding from visitors and animal lovers during this difficult time. Stay tuned for more information as they continue to honor Saied’s memory.
