UnitedHealth acquires doctor network from Steward Health Care

Steward Health Care, a hospital operator in Massachusetts, is facing financial difficulties with its hospitals and has taken steps to improve its financial situation by selling its national physician network to UnitedHealth’s Optum Care unit. The sale of Stewardship Health, known as the doctors group, was filed with the state’s Health Policy Commission on Tuesday.

Last year, Steward struggled to pay bills and rents due to its financial difficulties. The company saw this sale as a strategic move to address their crisis and make improvements to their operations moving forward. However, the documents did not specify a price for the sale and Optum officials have not yet provided a comment on the deal.

The sale of Stewardship Health is seen as a way for Steward Health Care to strengthen its system of 33 hospitals nationwide. With this strategic move, they hope to improve their financial position and continue providing high-quality care to patients across the country.
