Excessive reliance on technology compromises human connection

As new technologies continue to shape the world, leaders in business, science, politics, and other fields must consider the ethical implications of their advancements. While automation has the potential to bring many benefits, it should not come at the expense of people and jobs.

The rapid evolution of technologies such as generative artificial intelligence breakthroughs and improvements in robotics and manufacturing present a pressing issue for global leaders. They must prioritize ethics, workers’ livelihoods, and human creativity over efficiency. Automation has the potential to bring about many benefits, but it should not come at the expense of people and jobs.

According to a 2023 study by the McKinsey Global Institute, up to 30 percent of hours currently worked across the US economy could be automated. Additionally, Goldman Sachs predicts that roughly two-thirds of current jobs are exposed to some degree of AI automation. This underscores the need for a mindset that focuses on supporting workers rather than replacing them entirely.

College students preparing to enter the workforce should be trained to understand and use technology in a way that enhances their work without entirely replacing them. This approach can help mitigate the impact of automation on employment and ensure that workers are not left behind in this rapidly evolving technological landscape.

In addition to economic and job implications, there is also a growing ethical concern related to these new technologies. As generative AI begins to dabble in creating art and writing, questions arise about the authenticity of human creativity. These platforms often draw inspiration from existing artwork, raising legal and ethical issues related to intellectual property theft. To protect workers and artists from negative impacts, increased regulation is necessary in these fields.

Global leaders must prioritize ethics over efficiency when navigating this evolving technological landscape while ensuring a more sustainable and equitable future for all.
