Milcah Chemos, a Kenyan runner, has confirmed the death of marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum and his coach in a car crash in Kenya on Sunday night. The accident occurred on a road between Eldoret and Kaptagat in western Kenya, in the high-altitude region known for its popularity as a training base for long-distance runners.

According to Chemos, the crash happened around 11 p.m., and she went to the hospital in Eldoret along with other athletes and family members of Kiptum to identify his body. Reports indicate that a woman was also in the car and received serious injuries.

Kiptum had achieved immediate success by running the fastest time by a marathon debutant at the 2022 Valencia Marathon. He had won both the London and Chicago races the previous year, two of the world’s most prestigious marathons. World Athletics president Sebastian Coe expressed condolences and stated that Kiptum had set an “extraordinary marathon World Record” in Chicago. Coe also expressed that Kiptum’s loss would be deeply felt across the athletic community.
