Strong winds have caused the cancellation of the women’s downhill World Cup race in Zermatt-Cervinia for a second consecutive day. The season-opening downhill races will not proceed this weekend.

The first three men’s events of the season at the Swiss resort were also cancelled. However, the action was able to start in Austria on Saturday with Manuel Feller leading an Austrian podium in the opening men’s slalom race of the season.

In a statement by FIS Alpine, it was confirmed that Sunday’s race was cancelled due to strong wind gusts. Race director Peter Gerdol stated that Monday was not an option for a rescheduled race as it had been decided previously that it was not feasible.

Preparation will now begin for the giant slalom in Killington in the USA next weekend. Viewers can stream the 2023-24 Winter Sports season live on Eurosport and discovery+.
