Mumps cases on the rise, says Virginia Department of Health

The Virginia Department of Health has reported an increase in mpox cases in the state, with 12 cases reported since January 1. The cases have been reported from various health regions, including Central, Eastern, Northern, and Northwest. Four patients required hospitalization and six were co-infected with HIV. None of the patients had been previously vaccinated against mpox. In addition to this, in 2023, there were also 12 reported cases of mpox, all from the Northern Health region.

Signs and symptoms of mpox include fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, and a new, unexplained rash that may be painful. To protect yourself from mpox, it is important to take steps to prevent its spread through close, sustained physical contact. If you have been in close contact with someone who has mpox or if you suspect you may have been exposed to it, monitor yourself for symptoms for 21 days and consider getting vaccinated.

If you have mpox or symptoms of mpox or if you’re not sure whether you need testing or treatment options or how to protect yourself from the virus then don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. They will be able to provide guidance on what steps you should take next. Stay at home and avoid contact with other people and animals until your mpox rash has healed.
